DINARSKI SIR – RUNNER UP CHAMPION OF THE WORLD AT THE WORLD CHEESE AWARDS, LONDON!
Sirana Gligora’s incredible mixed milk cheese Dinarski sir finished joint 2nd at the 2014 World Cheese Awards in London (14/11/2014), and also retained the Best Central & Eastern European Cheese Trophy.
From just short of 3000 cheeses from as far afield as New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, USA and Europe, Dinarski sir was heading for the overall championship in the final best 16 cheeses of the world, but was piped to the post by Bath Blue from the UK.
Dinarski sir took its place alongside cheeses from France, Austria, the UK and USA among others in the live final which was presided over by a Supreme panel of international dairy experts, including Cathy Strange of Whole Foods Markets in the US and Ros Windsor of London’s Paxton & Whitfield.
“We are extremely proud of this this success and for all who have show such dedication at Sirana Gligora, We started producing Dinarski sir in our new dairy 3 years ago, and it’s already won two trophies at the World Cheese Awards” said master cheese maker Suzana on behalf of the company.
It’s the 2nd year in a row where Dinarski sir has taken a place in the final of the World Cheese Awards, and the 3rd time for Gligora following the remarkable success of Paški sir in 2010 where it won an unprecedented 3 Super Gold Medals and the Best New Cheese Trophy.
The South African judge who championed Paški sir in 2010 said “it’s nice to win a medal but it’s also good to benchmark your cheese to see how you fair against the rest of the world”. After Gligora’s resounding a consistent success it is now clear that their cheese is on equal footing with the greatest cheeses of the world.
In the past 5 years only 2 other international cheese producers have been represented in the final as much as Sirana Gligora. However, 2014 is the first time Gligora’s cheese has come so close to claiming the overall championship trophy in the final.
Dinarski sir is a hard cheese made from farmstead cow and goat milk from the Dinaric mountain region in Southern Croatia. First produced in 2011, it has already won 8 international titles for it’s quality and this year retains the Best Central & Eastern European Cheese Trophy, as well as finishing top of class in the mixed milk category with another Super Gold Medal.
At this years event which is by far the best result achieved by a Croatian cheese at an international level, Sirana Gligora’s classic extra mature Dalmatian cow milk cheese Kolan was also awarded a Super Gold medal, finishing top of class in perhaps the most competitive category of hard type cow milk cheese. Another cow milk cheese Težački sir followed closely behind in the same category with Gold, and Gligora also picked up a Bronze medal with Kozji sir iz maraske – a brand new cheese aged in pressed cherry skins from the world famous Maraske brewery in Zadar.
